Switched on Bach is the obvious choice for the top position on this list. This is the album which made the Moog synthesizer famous.

The music sounds wonderful, it is entirely Bach after all. Carlos has created several very subtle electronic timbres at a time when most people either tried to imitate existing instruments, or go to the other extreme of creating very obviously electronic timbres. The recording is a technical tour-de-force. It’s hard to imagine creating these pieces on a monophonic instrument which could not stay in tune for more than a few minutes.

Nice album cover, too. (Go to the used record store and look for one which credits Walter Carlos.)
